Effects of Pathogens on Terrestrial Ecosystem Function

چکیده
Many studies have demonstrated that pathogens can have strong effects on the per for mance of individual organisms, population dynamics, and community interactions. A more limited set of studies suggests that pathogens can alter a wide range of ecosystem functions in terrestrial systems; however, we are lacking a framework to predict the type and magnitude of ecosystem effects that a given pathogen will have. In this chapter, we present a number of general principles that determine how pathogens infl uence ecosystems over time, based on the welldeveloped fi elds of disturbance ecol ogy and the ecosystem effects of species composition. Our focus is not only on pathogens as disturbances but also as drivers of ecosystem pro cesses, even when their presence is not readily apparent.

Evaluating aerosol direct radiative effects on global terrestrial ecosystem carbon dynamics from 2003 to 2010
An integrated terrestrial ecosystem model and an atmospheric radiative transfer module are developed and applied to evaluate aerosol direct radiative effects on carbon dynamics of global terrestrial ecosystems during 2003 2010. The Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer measurements of key atmosphere parameters have been used to quantify aerosol effects on downward solar radiation. Simul...

متن کاملPredators have large effects on ecosystem properties by changing plant diversity, not plant biomass.
Cascading effects of predators on total plant trophic-level biomass tend to be weaker in terrestrial than in aquatic systems. Accordingly, it is hypothesized that top predator effects on terrestrial plant diversity and on ecosystem function should likewise be weak or unimportant. This report presents a test of this hypothesis using data from a long-term field experiment. The five-year experimen...
متن کاملThe effect of ecophysiography on the quantitative characteristics of DBH, height, basal area, crown diameter and canopy area of trees in mountain forest communities (Case study: Oak-hornbeam community in Arasbaran forest)
Ecophysiography is the geography of the earth and the relationship between physiography and the ecosystem. Ecophysiography is a basis for planning processes to study the characteristics of terrestrial systems concerning the interactions between terrestrial physiography and living organisms. Due to the current state of ecosystems and the increase in natural disasters for ecosystem sustainability...
متن کاملDirect and Terrestrial Vegetation-mediated Effects of Environmental Change on Aquatic Ecosystem Processes
Global environmental changes have direct effects on aquatic ecosystems, as well as indirect effects through alterations of adjacent terrestrial ecosystem structure and functioning. For example, shifts in terrestrial vegetation communities resulting from global changes can affect the quantity and quality of water, organic matter, and nutrient inputs to aquatic ecosystems. The relative importance...
